Digitally treating osteoarthritis through clinical, evidence-based programs can be more effective at reducing pain and improving physical function than routine self-managed care, according to research from
Researchers from the University of Nottingham conducted a randomized control trial comparing traditional care with the digital intervention from Joint Academy to find differences in outcomes for knee osteoarthritis.
Joint Academy is an online treatment program that connects patients with a licensed physical therapist who guides them through daily personalized exercises and answers any user questions. The platform tracks progress from week to week so the program can be modified to fit the patient’s needs.
NEW APP: Worcestershire Royal Hospital WORCESTERSHIRE Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs county hospitals, has partnered with Ampersand Health to roll out the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) app to support patients. My IBD Care app supports patients living with Crohn s disease and Ulcerative colitis and facilitates remote monitoring and communications between patients and their clinicians. The platform will help support approximately 2,800 IBD patients managed by the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and their clinicians - including Consultant Gastroenterologists, IBD Nurses, and Colorectal Surgeons. The chronic disease management app helps individuals to better self-manage their IBD on a day-to-day basis, bringing together a personal health record, medication and appointment reminders, daily lifestyle tracking (including mood, stress, exercise, diet, pain and sleep) and a library of easy-to-access lifestyle and wellbeing courses.

Looking to the rheumatology space, UK-based digital health company Ampersand Health is rolling out a new product called My Arthritis DTx to support patients with inflammatory arthropathies.
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis can use the tool to self-manage their condition. It provides users with educational resources and courses, and can connect to their clinical team if their UK National Trust uses the tool. Patients can asynchronously communicate with their care teams.
Patients using the tool can tap into cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness services. The tool also lets users track their arthritis over time, as well as monitor their physical health, mental health and sleep.
