this, running across the tarmac which is obviously not normal. so i laid down on the ground, basically, they just came over to me, they said, stay down, stay down. they didn t ask me any questions they put me in handcuffs and they basically said stay there. reporter: well, we know the suspect, ciancia was shot several times in the chest. but at this point, we do not have his condition. victor. now, of course, we ve learned that this is the first tsa officer to be killed in the line of duty. two others injured. but it sounds like this could have been much worse, dan. reporter: definitely could have been. here you have somebody who is, you know, hell-bent on creating mayhem and shooting people. obviously, he seemeded ed ted anger towards the tsa. he could have shot other tsa officers had he confronted them. i want you to listen to how the mayor put it when he described more ammunition clips were found here at the airport.

the water, right? right. the president s going through the motions there. i think he understands that that is not going to happen. he felt like he had to make the argument in his speech but it was noteworthy in his speech he include those items of sort of a laundry list he gave when he talks about the kind of measures he favors. he didn t spend much time on them. he spent his time instead on this background check and talking about the need for background checks and good he thinks would come of it. gregg: if the president goes down on all three and gets none of what he wants, book ground checks, ammunition clips, or assault weapons. what does this say about his effectiveness as a leader, especially upon capitol hill? i think it wouldn t be a good thing for him obviously politically. if you look the way he approached this issue in the immediate aftermath of those tragic shootings, what he said was he wanted to reframe the debate. he wanted this to be a debate that was different than
not be prepared to celebrate and say the fight is over. there s so much more work left to be done. you re a former mayor of a great city. you know that the problem firsthand. where does the urban league stand on the gun battle? we are fully behind the effort to create more sensible gun safety. you know, andrea, as a mayor, i fought that battle 15 years ago. and we were not successful in making change. this is a time when our legislators in congress have to have the courage to do something and not allow the politics of washington to get in the way. so we re for universal background checks, we re for cutting down on the size of ammunition clips, we re for eliminating assault weapons. we think that a lot of these measures ought to be voted up or down, and if they re voted up or down and people listen to the voice of the american people, listen to the families, whose children have been victims of gun violence, will pass sensible gun safety legislation. it s time for courage.
why wouldn t we want to make it more difficult for a dangerous person to get his or her hand on a gun? why wouldn t we want to close the loophole that allows as many as 40% of all gun purchases to take place without a background check? why wouldn t we do that? is the white house pulling back from using that? do you have any regrets in making the case that this is a bow gus stat? a substantial number of purchases of weapons are achieved without background check. that s a fact. everybody who has worked on this issue. republicans and democrats alike understand that. bret: the the washington post gave the president three pinocchios from the 40% stat because it comes from three decade old studies 1994. it s too bad that he used outdated statistic because people i have talked to say good background checks actually would do more to prevent gun violence than banning the ammunition clips or assault weapons. believe it or not, out of those three things, even though the background
