WHY: The Charter for African Cultural Renaissance adopted by the 6th AU Assembly held in Khartoum, the Sudan in January 2006 entered into force in October 2020 upon receipt by the AU Commission of the 15th instrument of ratification of this important arts, culture and heritage cultural policy instrument. The fifteen (15) AU Member States that have ratified this instrument are: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Chad, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Mali, Malawi, Nigeria, Niger, Senegal and South Africa. Thirty-four Member States have signed this instrument. The AU theme of the year for 2021 is: “Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa we Want”. Format
HIGHLIGHTS
A. Rwanda hosted a total of 133,029 refugees and asylum seekers at the end of March 2021.
The population of concern included mainly persons from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (58.4%) and Burundi (41.3%).
B. HE Amira El Fadil, the AU Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development and her delegation conducted a four-day mission to Rwanda (16-19 March 2021). Among other activities, the delegation visited ETM Gashora TC.
C. 85% of urban refugees and students are enrolled in the national Community Based Health Insurance (CBHI) initiative.
This is a marked improvement from 64% in 2019-2020. The CBHI cycle runs from 1 July to 30 June.
A Ministerial Conference on Migration Flow Management will be held on 11 May next at 09h00 (Lisbon time), organised under the scope of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union
The conference, in hybrid format, will take place in the Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon, and is one of the main initiatives of the Portuguese Presidency in the migration area, as well as an opportunity for further political dialogue with the countries of North Africa.
Taking part in the conference will be the Ministers for Home Affairs of the Member States of the European Union and Ministers and representatives of partner countries - Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal and Tunisia.

th of May, UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre (WHC) in collaboration with the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) hosted a webinar under the African Union s (AU) theme for 2021: Arts, culture and heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want .
The Director of the WHC, Ms Mechtild Rössler, inaugurated the event with an opening address on the resilience of African heritage and local stakeholders in facing the present challenges of preservation, while emphasizing the synergy of different UNESCO Culture Conventions to bring culture as an expression of the richness of Africa to the very centre of its socio-economic development.
