The union representing graduate student workers at the University of Michigan is entering the third week of its strike. While both sides remain far apart on salary and other benefits, both parties are assuring students that they will receive final grades. As WEMU's Josh Hakala reports, it's just a matter of when.
While rank-and-file graduate students have shown important courage in defying aggressive threats by the University, they face urgent political challenges above all, from their own union leadership.
At 10am Monday morning, a judge will hear arguments on whether the union representing graduate student instructors and staff assistants at the University of Michigan should be forced back to work. The Graduate Employees’ Organization, known as “GEO”, has been on strike since March 29th. WEMU’s Josh Hakala has an update.
