More than 800 students were at the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, when it was attacked Dec. 11 by armed men. Hundreds escaped and it was believed there were more than 330 still captive.

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) â More than 300 schoolboys abducted last week by armed men in northwest Nigeria have been released, the Katsina State governor said Thursday.
Governor Aminu Bello Masari made the announcement on Nigerian state TV, NTA, from his office in Katsina State.
âAt the moment 344 of the students have been released and handed over to the security operatives. I think we can say at least we have recovered most of the boys, if not all of them,â he said. Arrangements are being made to transport them to Katsina, he said.

KANKARA, Nigeria It was late Friday night when Usama Aminu heard gunshots, at first thinking they had come from the nearby town. As soon as he and the other students at the Government Science Secondary School in Kankara realized there was a raid on the school, they scrambled out of their dormitory and scaled the school’s fence in the pandemonium.
The 17-year-old told The Associated Press about the attack on the school in Nigeria’s northern Katsina State in which men armed with AK-47 rifles abducted more than 300 students from the boys’ school. The attack, claimed by Boko Haram, Nigeria’s jihadist rebels, has prompted an outcry in the West African nation against the government for not doing enough to stop attacks on schools in the north.
