UMass Amherst school administrators enacted a zero-tolerance, high risk COVID-19 pandemic stance in February that led to three female freshmen being cut off from online classes and having their $16,000 in tuition voided for the entire semester. The suspended students parents on Friday blasted the school s decision, which was made after someone handed administrators a photo that showed the freshman friends posing outside without masks at an off-campus event.

Baker’s easing of outdoor face-covering does not apply in Downtown Amherst; $300 fine eliminated Updated Apr 29, 2021; The new gubernatorial order says the $300 fine to enforce it will be eliminated. According to public health information posted on the municipal website, following Baker’s new order eliminating requirement to don a mask when adequate physical distancing is possible, Amherst Board of Health will review the matter during a remote meeting scheduled for May 13 at 5 p.m. For now, masking is required in the section of downtown, within the following borders: North boundary at Massachusetts Avenue between Lincoln Avenue and North Pleasant St.
