ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) News10NBC and ESL Federal Credit Union are proud to partner in recognizing five individuals who have gone above and beyond as winners of the 2021 Jefferson Awards. Meet one of the honorees, Bijaya Khada.
In a community already welcoming of immigrants, Rochester’s newcomers have one very prominent advocate who understands their challenges very personally.
As chairman of the City of Rochester s New Americans Advisory Council, Bijaya Khada helps fellow refugees and other immigrants connect with needed resources and speak out for themselves.
Khada was front and center recently as he facilitated the opening of the new K-Asian Market.
Born in a Nepali refugee camp, Bijaya Khadka came to Rochester in 2009 at the age of 17. Today, through his non-profit House of Refuge, he aims at helping other new Americans find the life in America he once dreamed of. Bijaya Khadka was 17 when he and his family left the refugee camp on the eastern edge of Nepal in 2009 to seek a better life in the United States.
Khadka, who had known no other life outside the bamboo and plastic huts of the camp erected on the banks of the Timai River, dreamed of America with wide eyes. He imagined a country free of poverty, free of crime, and full of opportunity for everyone. A “second heaven,” as he called it.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. The New Americans Advisory Council organized a Stop Asian Hate rally at the Maplewood YMCA in Rochester.
The Stop Asian American Pacific Islander Hate Reporting Center reported there were nearly 3,800 hate incidents in the US against Asian people within the last year. In the 2015, I was a victim of hate. My father was a victim of hate and I can name dozens of people that have faced the hatred towards our community. I m thankful people are finally noticing, said Bijaya Khadka, founding chair of the New Americans Advisory Council.
