Voltaire, the 18th century French writer-philosopher, preferred an enlightened aristocracy to democracy yet he eloquently embraced one of the latterâs most sacred tenets, the right to free speech.
âI disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,â he is said to have responded to his antagonists.
In a world that seems to be divided between neoliberal orthodoxy and identitarian dogmas, it is possible to miss the waning presence of traditional social democracy. Born of the radical Left in Marx’s own time, social democrats worked, sometimes with remarkable success, to improve the living standards of working people by accommodating the virtues of capitalism. Today, that kind of social democracy learned at home from my immigrant grandparents and from the late Michael Harrington, one time head of the American Socialist Party is all but dead. This tradition was, in retrospect, perhaps too optimistic about the efficacy of government. Nevertheless, it sincerely sought to improve popular conditions and respected the wisdom of ordinary people.

Every year on March 8, we see men on the street with bouquets of flowers – for the beloved, the mother, the colleague, the neighbor. Women dress festively, smile more than on the ordinary days, make plans for where they will spend Women s Day. They are glad that there is a day when they can feel special, pamper themselves and have fun.
There are also those opposed to the holiday who feel uncomfortable with this planned and expected attention from men. They believe that the woman should be respected and honored not only on March 8, but also on March 7th, and on the 9th, on any day of the year. Both sides have a right. But why is March 8th celebrated as Women s Day? What is the history of the holiday?
