The Committed by Viet Thanh Nguyen (Grove, Mar.) - Nguyen follows his Pulitzer-winning The Sympathizer with a sequel about a Vietnamese refugee in 1980s Paris who becomes a drug dealer on his path to assimilation. The novel earned a starred review from PW.
Everyone Knows Your Mother Is a Witch by Rivka Galchen (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, June) - Widow herbalist Katharina gets slapped with an accusation of witchcraft in 1618 Germany by a neighbor whom she calls “the Werewolf” in Galchen’s novel of a small town feverish with fear.

With 11 plays scheduled over eight months in 2020, OSF was forced to shut down only a few days into its season after Gov. Kate Brown banned large gatherings because of the pandemic.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will launch its first-ever combined digital and live season on March 1, nearly a year after the coronavirus pandemic darkened stages in Ashland and across the country.
In the offing for 2021 are streaming favorites from OSF’s archives, original works on the digital platform O!, and four plays onstage at OSF’s Ashland campus in the fall and winter. Live performances will extend into January for the first time.

The historic clock tower in Failsworth
Time is set to stand still in Failsworth this week with repairs and servicing of the historic clocktower due to begin tomorrow (Monday).
The faulty clock was reported back in October by Failsworth Councillor Sean Fielding who tweeted an image at the time of one of the clocks four faces displaying ten minutes to seven at quarter to twelve in the morning.
Clock repair specialists, Penrith-based Cumbria Clocks, attended the site and attempted to reset the clocktower’s four dials, but were only able to carry out work on three with the fourth frozen on the external face.
AT around 7:30 in the morning of Dec. 30, 1896, Remington shots rang out under a clear sky in the Bagumbayan field (now the Luneta) in Manila. A firing squad consisting of Filipino soldiers had carried out the death sentence of the now national hero Jose Rizal on orders of the Spanish colonial government.
Defiant to the end, he haggled with authorities on how he ought to face his death. He rejected suggestions that he be blindfolded with his back to the firing squad, which appeared to be the protocol for the execution of traitors.
The court martial that found Rizal guilty of sedition, rebellion and conspiracy completed a âjudicial processâ in 56 days, starting with his arrest on board a ship bound for Spain on Nov. 3, 1896. The formal trial itself, commencing with the appointment of judges on Christmas Day of that year, lasted only two days.
