Stuttgart High School student receives American Legion Auxiliary Youth Good Deed Award

Stuttgart High School senior Grace Earl received a Good Deed Award after she created over 300 cards for veterans. Stuttgart High School senior Grace Earl received an American Legion Auxiliary Youth Good Deed Award after she created over 300 Veterans Day cards for patients at the veterans’ hospital in Little Rock. Earl was nominated on behalf of the American Legion Department of Arkansas. Dyan Bohnert, the Children and Youth Chairman for the American Legion Auxiliary Daniel Harder Unit 48 in Stuttgart, presented the award to Earl at her school on Friday, April 16. Charlotte Purdy, Children and Youth Chairman for the American Legion Department of Arkansas, learned about Earl’s story after reading a Stuttgart Daily Leader article written about her Veterans Day efforts.  

Indiana Legion helps provide veteran with much-needed car

The American Legion Apr 14, 2021 Thanks to the generosity of a local attorney, and a collaboration between the American Legion Department of Indiana and Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation (HVAF), a formerly homeless veteran now has a vehicle all his own. On April 9, Marine Corps veteran Steve Griffin was presented a car by Department Commander Allen Connelly at the Indiana American Legion’s headquarters in Lawrence. The donation came as a result of an individual reaching out to Billy Johnson, who is in charge of business development for the American Legion Department of Indiana. Johnson said Indianapolis attorney Kevin Alerding, who Johnson taught during ROTC classes at Ball State University, reached out to him to see if he knew of any veterans in need of a used vehicle. The department took the donated vehicle through its Legacy Foundation, which was created to identify the unmet needs of U.S. military personnel, veterans and their families, and provide the necessary resou

COVID concerns cancel 7th Inning Stretch festival for 2021

The Shelby Star The fate of this year’s American Legion World Series remains to be determined, but organizers have decided to cancel the popular 7th Inning Stretch Festival that is held each year in Shelby in connection with the tournament.  “After much consideration, the American Legion World Series organizers have decided to cancel the 2021 7th Inning Stretch Festival,” read a statement from the American Legion National Headquarters.  The festival, which features a 5K, Little Miss ALWS Pageant, booths, food, games and music including a well-known headliner, was created when the American Legion World Series made Shelby its home.  It gives players, their families and locals a chance to let down their hair and celebrate summer.
