This storm has already proven deadly. Almost three hundred people have died most of them in haiti. We have team coverage. Per hour and theres really the concern of a deadly storm surge that could be up to 11 feet. Jay gray has more from Daytona Beach. Moving a reporter moving along the florida coast matthew is in many areas overwhelming. We are seeing the impacts and its a monster. Reporter violent winds sheets of rain and a growing surf with the potential in some areas of a storm surge up to 11 feet. I am begging you at this point to understand the ri those types of storm surges that is not something you want to get caught up in. Reporter electricity has become a luxury for many in the strike zone. Tens of thousands have lost power and that number is expected to grow. More than 11 million along the east coast are currently under a hurricane warning. Airports across the region closed. Businesses boarded up and shelters filling up. More than half a Million People are without power after wind gusts approached 100 miles an hour overnight. Its really important that we get power restored as quickly as we can. Matthews eye is just off shore and moving parallel to the coast, meaning the powerful winds of the eye wall could impact hundreds of miles of shoreline while the storms flooding rains spread well inland. The weather is just starting to go downhill in northern florida and on the georgia coastline. Matthew is already a in haiti, hit hard by the storm earlier this week, the death toll is approaching 500. Here in florida, damage estimates are underway in towns south of the storm but forecasters say this may not be the last the state will see of matthew. It will transition to a category 2 we think somewhere around georgia maybe transitioning to a 1 as it pushes through the South Carolina coast and then does this big loop pushing back down toward the bahamas. Temperatures now. It is 5 degrees for your plants even with full sunshine, most towns in the 50s. 57 bedford, it is 60 in norwood, those are a couple milder spots. But the bottom line is this, the temperatures will continue to drop overnight to tonight. On top, we have wind blowing out out north. A wiferred continues out here on the cape cod and the islands because of those wind gusts which have been up over 50 Miles Per Hour. Look at the wind gusts we have seen so far during the day today i. Makes it feel colr. Which allows the temperature to drop more quickly, thats what we are watching for tonight. But, in edgartown, 58 Miles Per Hour wind gusts . Look at nantucket, 58 as well. All these Tropical Storm strength, clearly matthew didnt that loop backwards toward florida and the bahamas, went in the ocean and rolled the front up to us, off shore, bringing heavy rain and gusty wind as well.
