Ariarne Titmus has produced one of the great moments in Australian Olympic history, beating the legendary American Katie Ledecky in the 400m freestyle final.
The two rivals have been waiting for years for a chance to race at the Olympics, but it was the Australian who reigned supreme with a winning time of 3:56.69.
Ledecky, the five-time Olympic gold medalist, looked to be controlling the race from first place from its early stages, but Titmus timed her run to perfection.

TOKYO (AP) The Latest on the Tokyo Olympics, which are taking place under heavy restrictions after a year’s delay because of the coronavirus pandemic:

Japan ended China’s overwhelming dominance in table tennis by winning Olympic gold in mixed doubles in a major upset.
Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito beat a Chinese team that has often seemed unbeatable. China won all four gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and the team of Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen was a heavy favorite this time.

Olympics Latest: Ledecky denied gold in 400m freestyle

Australia’s Ariarne Titmus has defeated American Katie Ledecky in the 400-meter freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics.
Titmus won one of the most anticipated races of the games, capturing the gold medal with the second-fastest time in history.
Titmus, who trailed by nearly a full body-length at the halfway mark of the eight-lap race, turned on the speed to touch in 3 minutes, 56.69 seconds.
Defending Olympic champion and world-record holder Ledecky settled for the silver this time in 3:57.36 the fourth-fastest time ever recorded.
No one else was even close. The bronze went to China’s Li Bingjie in 4:01.08.

Ariarne Titmus of Australia has won gold in the women s 400m freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing with a time of 3:56:69.
Titmus time is the second fastest ever behind American Katie Ledecky s world record of 3:56:36.
Ledecky, a five-time gold medalist, won silver with a time of 3:57:36, the fourth fastest time ever. Li Bingjie of China won bronze with a time of 4:01:08.
Titmus win gives Australia its second gold medal of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and fifth medal overall.
