This weekend’s Commencement celebrations will be a full-circle moment for Kizzmekia Corbett ’14 (Ph.D.) as she virtually comes home to the place her science career began and delivers the Commencement address that will send a new generation of Tar Heels out into the world.
“I don’t even think I ever would have imagined ever giving a Commencement speech,” she said. “You can’t beat being honored in this way by a place that trained you and raised you in many ways. I’m a scientist because I started being a scientist at UNC.”
Corbett will deliver her remarks virtually at all five ceremonies alongside Dr. Anthony Fauci. The researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases are two of the leading experts on COVID-19 research and national response strategies.
Carolina’s spring graduation will feature two of the biggest names in COVID-19 research and national response strategies who will be, virtually, on the same stage in Kenan Stadium for multiple live commencement exercises honoring the Class of 2021 and a limited number of their invited guests.
Drs. Anthony Fauci and Kizzmekia Corbett ’14 (Ph.D.) will team up to deliver Carolina’s Spring Commencement address this May.

On Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021, at 4:30 p.m. (EST), the Andrews University Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry will host an online presentation by Kizzmekia Shanta Corbett, PhD, senior research fellow and team lead for coronavirus research within the Viral Pathogenesis Laboratory (VPL) at the Vaccine Research Center, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Corbett will address the safety and effectiveness of the coronavirus vaccines.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, current director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the chief medical adviser designate to the incoming Biden–Harris administration, who has served American public health for over 50 years, has spoken glowingly about Corbett: Kizzy is an African American scientist who is right at the forefront of the development of the vaccine. The very vaccine that s one of the two that ha
