war ii. and the president in his remarks that we have seen so far is supposed to talk about what he s going to refer to as a cherished alliance that the united states has with its partners. i think that will be a notable moment. we ll have to find out to see what s in the rest of this speech and whether he veers off those remarks as he sometimes tends to do. we saw earlier this morning when he left ireland, one of the reasons he was running behind was talking to reporters, was talking about tariffs to mexico. did not spend as much time talking about normandy and the 75 anniversary of d-day. he ll make up for that in a few moments. it s so important what he s about to say in terms of the overall message that is conveyed by his presidency i think. stand by, we re going to come back to normandy in just a moment, and as jim was talking, we have seen some of the prepared remarks of the president. he does talk about the idea of unity and the collective forces of the world banding together.
and jim, we understand they re running late now, 15 minutes, the ceremony is postponed. do you know why? reporter: well, the president did leave ireland, he was at his golf club overnight and he did leave ireland 30 minutes late. they did make up some time as they were making their way over here. the san antonceremony is runnin5 minutes late. as a result, there will be some folks who might not like that and wonder why the president can t get here on time. it s an undertaking to move the president of the united states in that fashion. it s a logistical thing more than anything else. when he takes the stage, comes up to the microphone and delivers these remarks, this is going to be a pretty notable moment i think in the presidency of donald j. trump. so much of his presidency has been about america first, yun laterali unilateralism and calling
he s very concerned about that. when you talk to french officials. putting all of that aside, yes, you look at the faces of these men who have been here to remind us every anniversary on d-day of the price that was paid on these beaches in their blood, and in their toil, and in their sweat to make sure the world could remain free. yes, lots of nations talk about putting their own country first. but this was an event for all of humanity when the world was put first, when freedom was put first, when liberty was put first, and you know, we all owe a debt of gratitude to these heroes and these patriots, patriots first who really saved the world from the darkest forces that mankind really has ever known and as we watch this unfold today, whatever you think of president trump, whatever you think about the politics of the day, it is sort of an amazing thing to sit back, and reflect
veterans of d-day. there s one thing i want to point out about the image and stage which is really wonderful, president trump, president macron, the leaders of the world, they are sitting amongst the u.s. veterans, the war veterans, the people who landed that day, and helped save the world because they are the focus of today and what today is all about, and i think it s a wonderful image to see those faces in such prom in accordance on this day. we expect president macron to speak momentarily. we re going to sneak in a quick break before that and bring you the speeches when we come back. [sfx: turntable - needle scratching record] [music (plays throughout): lack of afro - recipe for love] whoaahoooo oo yeahhh aa aa aye i ve got so much love to give i ve got so much more to give, baby this is a moment you plan for. to start your retirement plan,
between those two leaders. also worth noting, president trump was scheduled to visit an american cemetery this afternoon, alex. that visit was canceled due to the weather. the white house saying the president and first lady s trip to the american cemetery and memorial has been canceling due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather. worth noting, though, some french officials have taken to twitter and criticize that had move because the angela merkel visited a similar memorial despite the fact that they were dealing with the same weather conditions, alex? clearly, kristen, you are keeping your eye on a lot of different moving parts here. thank you so much for doing so. we look forward to talking with you again. joining me now the president immediately sent out that combative tweet that kristen was referencing there just as air force one touched
