welcome to the beat. we have a lot going on tonight. possible legal nightmares increasing for donald trump. you may say doesn t he already have enough legal problems, but with a top campaign lake cooperating with jack smith it is another story. george santos also back in court with a lot of problems. we begin with the wider story we were discussing with the breaking news yesterday, the war on rights waged by a supreme court that said it cared about president but only cares about some precedent. this now trump tax court is that these two rulings, businesses can now legally refuse service to lgbtq customers, ruling in favor of a web designer who said they could not, would not work on same-sex weddings. now businesses can refuse to sell products and services basically on the argument that the message matters more than the equality and nondiscrimination of their potential client base. no one he wants to go about their lives thinking if i go to this place, if i go to this restau
restaurant, am i going to be turned away for who i am, and the court seems to say well that is, you know, a part of life. again, another supreme court ruling that pushes back, and backwards according to many civil rights advocates, against the gains we ve made in this country with the quality, and equality means that everyone has to agree or live the same way. the quality just means that there is a baseline level of respect for all people. you go all the way back to the 60s at mlk s civil rights act was all about, remember what? it was about how people correspond in public life and businesses, whether they can go up to order their food or order their drink. it is a version of that today along a different issue than race, but one that also raises the question of how we adjudicate these matters. can we disagree but do so in a way where everyone is treated equally or not, and obviously
court, and i say this quite seriously about the commitment of its own actions and rulings and some of its own members ethical failures is sacrificing this course ability to do that. that is a bigger issue than whether or not any person agrees or disagrees with a given ruling. it is the issue that this court has put before the nation here on this summer friday night. we have two excellent guest we have lined up to think about this more broadly based on the rulings yesterday, the rulings today, and where we are headed. we have the cm of the leadership council on human and civil rights, and who return to to talk about america s winding road on civil rights. he was the chief white house ethics lawyer under the george w. bush administration. he has a new article out on msnbc.com and says alito s new excuses are nonsense.
