Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate presented 2021 Carrie Chapman Catt Awards to both Charles City High School and Carrie Lane High School Tuesday. The award was presented at the girlhood home of Catt located just south of Charles City and goes to any school that registers at least 90% of eligible students to vote.
In Iowa, a 17-year-old can register to vote if he or she will be the legal voting age of 18 at the time of the next election. This is the first time each school has earned the Carrie Chapman Catt Award.
Carrie Lane Program Coordinator Donn Betts said, “Our school is named in honor of the woman suffragette whose childhood home is located in Charles City. Our students have close ties with the National 19th Amendment Society and serve at the Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Childhood Home and Museum during the year. Encouraging high school seniors to register to vote is a step toward creating compassionate competent problem-solving adults
