Last year Environment Canterbury commissioned GNS Science to model impacts of various tsunami scenarios for coastal areas throughout the region. Subsequently, it has revised and re-modelled some Tsunami Evacuation Zones, which includes Hurunui district. Hurunui District Council (HDC) has been working closely with Environment Canterbury, neighbouring councils and local emergency services to create revised or refreshed evacuation zones and response plans for the Southern Hurunui coast. At present, there is no change to Tsunami Evacuation Zones north of Waipara Rocks, several kilometres north of the Waipara River mouth.

Fire in north Canterbury brought under control

Fire crews were out in force in Amberley this morning. Photo: RNZ / Richard Tindiller Crews were called to the scrub fire near Newcombes Road and Amberley Beach shortly after 6am. Four crews and a helicopter were used to fight the blaze, which covered 15,000sq/m. The blaze in the Hurunui District was reported to have covered an area of about 100m by 150m. The spokesperson said no homes had been under threat but fine but that windy conditions had contributing to the fire s strength. Tags:
