for the white house tonight, shep. shepard: indeed it is, ed henry at the white house. as we continue to look live this is taksim a large square in the center of the city. another square near where all of this began. it s actually just a very small park. and it was very close to this and had what amounted to the last green space in all of this part of the city. that s how all of this began with a group of protesters who wanted to save the trees. the prime minister has asked to meet with them tomorrow but they are now refusing. at 2:30 in the morning we know he will be meeting tomorrow with some sort of famous people and the protesters, the original protesters are saying this is just the beginning, that this will now spread and it will grow. joining us now from context and perspective, ambassador stewart holiday. he is the former u.s. ambassador for special political affairs at the united nations. sir, with what degree of concern do you watch this? well, i think it s obviously very
escalation of this, it could trigger a back fire for the prime minister. he has got to be very very careful about how he handles this in the coming 24 hour people. shepard: he needs dialogue and so far the protesters have denied it? that s right. he does need to show that he is willing to reach out. he has developed this reputation, a very tough leader but for him, is he running for president. and he wants to be the first popularly elected president in turkish history in 2014. for him, he is going to need to handle this very carefully. ambassador stewart holiday with the knowledge that he has already tried to put more powers to that office of the presidency an office to which he wants to move. we shall see how this plays out and we have continuing coverage throughout the night and the weeks ahead. the naciousd watchman who admits he shot an unarmed teenager named travon martin back in court today and looking very different. now, his brother is speaking out about george zimmerman
civilian government to take control. and the obama administration is among those calling for faster transfer, to civilian rule, parliamentary elections begin on monday, so, what can we expect to see unfold in egypt in the coming days and months? ambassador stewart holiday is the former u.s. ambassador it for special political affairs and ambassador, always good to see you. this is a very difficult time in the middle east, as it contains egypt. what s happening there? what can the united states do to quell the unrest? well, as you know, egypt is a critically important country for the united states, and with its 85 million people sort after bellwether for the whole region. the military is in a tough position for a couple of reasons, first of all, the electoral system, the process that s been set up is a very complex one that actually plays out over a six week, six week period. there s going to be a lack of clarity, even though the
gets out of control, one of the if not the most strategic threats to the united states. if we do not maintain the kind of governance and support the efforts there to maintain the secular democratic system, which is occasionally in a precarious situation. and what is does your gut say who within pakistan may have known about bin laden s whereabouts, the pakistani spy agency, is it possible they were playing a double game here? i think that s possible. but i do think that, look, pakistan right after september 11th, when rich armitage went over there, they were sending a clear signal. bin laden was a different case. and they knew that if it was coming to bin laden, that we would spare no expense and do everything we could to get him. ambassador stewart holiday, thank you so much. i appreciate your time today, ambassador. thank you very much. and i appreciate your time watching today. i m contessa brewer. thank you for watching. i ll be back tomorrow, noon eastern, 9:00 a.m. ou
