Scouts need help to fill the food bank

Scouts need help to fill the food bank Carl Kieke I could use some help this weekend from any of my readers who may be in Abilene. Until a few years ago, Boy Scouts ran a food drive for Food Bank of West Central Texas in early November. For several reasons, it ran its course and was discontinued. This year it returns, but in a different format. Instead of going door-to-door, youth groups are setting up in front of Abilene’s United Supermarkets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.  There aren’t enough scout units in Abilene to cover all stores all day. So the opportunity is being offered to Girl Scouts, 4-H, Trail Life Boys and American Heritage Girls.

Girl Scout gets veterans accolades

Girl Scout gets veterans accolades Carl Kieke Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6873 in Abilene honored a young woman as their Girl Scout of the Year during ceremonies last week. Olivia Hessock, now a freshman at Angelo State University, received the annual honor. She is the daughter of Jennifer and Norman Hessock of Abilene. Hessock graduated from Wylie in 2020 – one of the seniors with the misfortune of losing much of their senior year to the COVID pandemic. But before that, she was obviously quite busy. Before moving to Abilene, she lived in Alaska, where, as a Junior Girl Scout, she earned the Bronze award. Among other requirements, she completed a project teaching badges to Brownies (grades 2-3) and participating in food drives for local food pantries.

First Girl Born During Girl Scout Week Showered With Gifts

ROCK SPRINGS Allison Reese Zumbrennen doesn’t know it yet, but she just might be a future Girl Scout. Allison was born at 1:16 a.m. Friday, March 12, 2021, at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County to Monica and Alec Zumbrennen of Green River. She weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces and is 19 inches long. She’s also the first girl born at Sweetwater Memorial during Girl Scout Week. “The Girl Scouts welcome our newest, future Girl Scout,” said Kris Sherwin, Service Unit Manager for Girl Scouts in Green River.  Advertisement - Story continues below. For over 10 years, the Green River Girl Scout troops donate a basket of baby items to the first baby girl born during Girl Scout Week. This year, that’s March 7-13. The individual Girl Scouts each donated to the basket of goodies.
