Amazon Officially Cancels Their Lord Of The Rings Game

Amazon Officially Cancels Their Lord Of The Rings Game Posted on The Lord Of The Rings video game that was being produced by Amazon Game Studios has officially been canceled by the studio. Surprisingly, this one doesn t seem to be because Amazon decided to cut bait and give up on it like they have other projects that past couple of years, but more for the fact that they could not agree with the other party involved, Tencent Games. According to Bloomberg, AGS has been working on the game alongside the China-based developer Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd. for nearly two years. Stop us if you ve heard this one before, but that company was purchased back in December by Tencent, simply because they could. (Which incidentally, if you re not paying attention to Tencent s slow but steady takeover of the games market in China and the APAC region, you should start!) The Lord of the Rings MMO cancelled by Amazon following Tencent acquisition of Leyou – TheSixthAxis

18/04/21 Back in 2019, it was confirmed that Amazon was funding an MMO based on The Lord of the Rings though details were very scant on what the MMO would entail. Those details will not really matter now as Amazon has confirmed to Bloomberg that The Lord of the Rings MMO has been cancelled. This is following a contractual dispute with Tencent. Lord of the Rings MMO Canceled Due to Contractual Dispute Between Tencent and Amazon

Apr 18, 2021 04:43 EDT In 2019, Athlon Games announced to have partnered with Amazon Game Studios to develop the Lord of the Rings MMO. This made sense, as Amazon was already making the new Lord of the Rings television series. Only a few months ago, a rather detailed development roadmap mentioned early 2023 as the target window for the Lord of the Rings MMO Open beta. However, it appears that once Tencent acquired Leyou in late 2020, a contractual dispute between Tencent and Amazon led to the sudden project s termination. An Amazon spokesperson told Bloomberg: We have been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time. We love the Lord of the Rings IP and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers.
