and injured five others after one of his high school graduation ceremonies in virginia. among the dead, a father and a graduate, still in his cap and gown. police say renzo smith and his 18-year-old son shawn jackson were killed by a 19-year-old who has now been charged with second degree murder. joining me now from richmond is nbc news correspondent aaron gilchrist. aaron, what happened? reporter: well, katy, there have been graduations held at this theater behind me for generations. i can tell you i m a richmond public schools graduate. my sister s graduation was in that building 20-plus years ago. and never has this community had to deal with this sort of an incident connected with the graduation ceremony. what we learned from the police chief, the suspect amare pollard, 19 years old was at the graduation ceremony. he was not a student, but he did attend the ceremony. afterwards, apparently he and shawn jackson, the young man who will died here had an exchange of words outside the
people were on the sidewalks in the hundreds taking pictures, celebrating this moment. whatever that exchange was landed pollard, police say, to go back to his car, retrieve a gun and come back to the theater and open fire outside. you can see the chaos that ensued there. people running in all directions people trying to get back in the theater away from the gunfire here. unfortunately, we know that seven people were hit by that gunfire, shawn jackson and his stepfather renzo smith were both shot. and they both die ted scene here. those five other people who were injured had nonlife-threatening injuries they were able to go to the hospital to be treated nearby. at this point, police say they ve charged pollard with two counts of second degree murder in this incident. he appeared in court this morning for an arraignment and pled not guilty. at the same time, we understand he s being held without bond in jail for a second appearance that will help for a couple weeks here. meantime, this
she s okay. police arresting 19-year-old amare pollard. police say he and jackson had exchanged words and say pollard got a gun from his car and opened fire before calmly surrendering to officers at the scene. this was targeted at one individual so they knew each other and had an ongoing dispute. reporter: witnesses in the school community are still in shock. seared in my mind is the image of our graduate who walked across the stage who i shook his hand literally 15 minutes before on the ground in his gown getting cpr. how do you explain that to kids? i saw the young man who passed away breathing what i think are very much his last breaths. i saw him, and he was a child. reporter: tonight the suspect is being held without bond after pleading not guilty to two counts of second degree murder. he s due back before a judge in two weeks. lester. aaron, thank you. now to an nbc news exclusive in partnership with telemundo.
