The New Humanitarian | Syria aid at risk in Security Council vote

STOCKHOLM The UN’s last remaining entry point for transporting assistance into rebel-held Syria hangs in the balance, as the Security Council gears up for a vote aid groups say could be one of the most important diplomatic showdowns of the decade-long war. After so many years of conflict, a recent and ongoing economic collapse has combined with the COVID-19 pandemic to propel humanitarian needs in Syria to new highs. The World Food Programme says a record-breaking 60 percent of the population is now food insecure. Nowhere is the situation worse than in Idlib, a northwestern region that has suffered enormously from the war. Now ruled by Tahrir al-Sham, an extreme Islamist group under UN and US counterterrorism sanctions, Idlib is packed with displaced civilians, many of whom have had to flee their homes multiple times.

Reflections on Syria s Decade of Conflict

Monday, March 15, 2021 10:00 am - 11:00 am For the past decade, Syria has been ravaged by violent armed conflict. The civil war has displaced 6.2 million people internally with 6.6 million seeking asylum abroad. The international and local aid communities have mobilized assistance for the 13 million Syrians in need an 18 percent increase from last year yet without a political solution to hostilities, the humanitarian crisis will persist.  The CSIS Humanitarian Agenda will be joined by Alex Mahoney, Syria Response Director of USAID s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance, and series contributors Basma Alloush, Policy and Advocacy Advisor of the Norwegian Refugee Council, Amany Qaddour, Regional Director of Syria Relief and Development, and Mais Balkhi, Program Manager of Humanitarian Practice at InterAction, to discuss the future of humanitarian response in Syria. The conversation will be moderated by Jacob Kurtzer, Director and Senior Fellow of the CSIS Humanitarian Agenda
