Contribute to our culture, they make our country a more attractive place for businesses to locate and bring jobs for everybody. So lets get Immigration Reform one this year. Lets get it done. Its time. The ideas i have outline sod far can speed up growth and create more jobs but in this rapidly changing economy, we have to make sure that every american has the skills to fill those jobs. The good news is, we know how to do it. Two years ago, as the Auto Industry came roaring back, andra rush opened up a Manufacturing Firm in detroit. She knew that ford needed parts for the bestselling truck in america and she knew how to make those parts. She just needed the work force. So she dialed up what we call an american job center, places where folks can walk in to get the help or training they need to find a new job or a better job. She was flooded with new workers. Today, Detroit Manufacturing Systems has more than 700 employees. What andra and her employees experienced is how it should be for
When both parties do come together, though both will not show the same reaction tonight to what is the president s fifth state of the union address. He walks into the Chamber Tonight presiding over a better u. S. Economy than when he took over the job, though with millions struggling, youll hear him talk about income inequality tonight as we watch the first lady enter. He will talk about education and immigration and minimum wage, and hell talk about health care now that there has been a leveling off after a rough launch. This night traditionally one part status report on our nation, one part wish list for the future of our nation. Its that second component that has become so tough with our politics so fractured. And were just seeing the entry, as weve been talking, of the first lady into the box on the second floor of the inside of the House Chamber. She passed by dr. Jill biden. All of the various guests arranged there and by invitation. Chuck todd, the last thing we mentioned, and i
Rating has dropped from 52 to 46 . Joining me tonight are are Bob Schieffer, our chief washington correspondent and anchor of face the nation and norah odonnell, cohost of cbs this morning. Nora, youve been talking to your sources at the white house. Whats in the president s speech . Well, the president tonight in his state of the union will promise a year of action is his words. He will also address the concerns about economic inequality in this country. But it follows, quite frankly, what has been a year of inaction. The president last year in his state of the union talked about minimum wage, talked about Immigration Reform, talked about gun control, all of that Unfinished Business that he will try and talk about again tonight. But hell need Congress Help on those. And while congress has been unwilling to act on many of those measures, the president tonight will be talking about executive actions, things he can do on his own to help jump start his second term. Pelley as we were just
Where the sergeant at arms will soon introduce the president and i say soon as one of those sort of variable words because we already know from our producers who are monitoring the timeline sent to us earlier in the day they are by our producers calculations some eight to nine minutes behind schedule. On hand tonight both houses of congress, several Supreme Court justices, the joint chiefs and president s cabinet. One cabinet member will not be present in case of catastrophe and tonight the secretary of energy will not be here, so weve seen an advanced copy of the speech and president obama plans to call for 2014 to be a year of action as he puts it. He plans to ask congress to work with him to create opportunities for folks who are still struggling after the Great Recession but the president will also make clear, we are told, that he is willing to go around congress when he must. We expect him to outline a dozen or so executive actions, one of those in order to raise the minimum wage
Blackwell of policylink and Michael Tanner of the cato institute. Ifill here with us now, as they will be throughout the evening, our own shields and brooks. Syndicated columnist mark shields and New York Times columnist david brooks. 7 so, gentlemen, put on your prognostication hats. What do you expect tonight . It wont be f. D. R. s new deal. Were not looking at the 100 days here. Were looking at modesty, theme of opportunity, discussion of the executive order. Immigration will be bigger, probably a few threats on the debt ceiling somake sure congress doesnt put us in default, but not look at a gigantic agenda. Im most interested in the tone. I think the president a nation that is severely pessimistic, has been now in the wrong direction rather than on the right track for 10 years now. The sense of pesmism is pervasive, and i want to see if the president can connect with people beyond the room tonight. Woodruff is there a defensiveness already setting in with this state of the union
