Subscriber only Brisbane s bid to host the 2032 Olympic Games will have no bearing on the Sunshine Coast s mass transit plans, according to the council. Options being considered range from bus network upgrades to a quality busy corridor and bus rapid transit, trackless trams and the most controversial being the light rail from Maroochydore to Caloundra. A planned light rail route connecting the Sunshine Coast has been referenced in council and state government documents for several years, including in a 2019 feasibility study into Queensland s Olympic Games bid. The study was released by the SEQ Office of Mayors and listed the Sunshine Coast s future light rail network as being critical in delivering the event.
Options being considered range from bus network upgrades to a quality busy corridor to bus rapid transit, trackless trams and light rail. Consultation will begin on April 28 on Sunshine Coast Council s mass transit plans. Pictured right is Mayor Mark Jamieson. The process will cost council $330,000 and is being run by Amanda Newberry s Brisbane firm Articulous. The company is described as Australia s most groundbreaking engagement and communication consultancy. Further community engagement on the plans was ordered in August last year after groups called for the council to be upfront about its plans for population densities and development along the proposed light rail corridor.
