Answer Man: White pelicans on Lake Julian? Greyhound station closure?

Today’s batch of burning questions, my smart-aleck answers and the real deal: Question: On April 9, a group of us were rowing on Lake Julian, and we saw this flock of white pelicans. Is Asheville on their migratory path? My answer: That, or maybe they know something about global warming we don t, and they re scouting for future oceanside retreats. Real answer: Duke Energy operates the Lake Julian power plant, and company spokeswoman Meghan Musgrave Miles checked with their environmental sciences team and dug up some cool information about this phenomenon. White Pelicans are a migratory species that winter along the southeast Gulf Coast and Florida, Miles said. They are one of the largest birds on North America, with a nine-foot wingspan, all white with a stark black-wing area.

Linn-Benton STEM programs get grants

The Mid-Valley STEM-CTE Hub recently awarded $78,019 in educator and community-based organizations microgrants. “With ample evidence that COVID-19 is widening the existing systemic education and inequality gaps, our aim is to partner with educators and local nonprofits to develop projects that reduce barriers and support students,” said Director Sarah Whiteside. “Through this support, students will gain more access to meaningful science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and career and technical education (CTE) opportunities.” The microgrants are provided by the Mid-Valley STEM-CTE Hub with funding and support from the Oregon Department of Education, Ford Family Foundation, Oregon Community Foundation and John and Ginger Niemeyer Foundation.
