A planning commission meeting Tuesday to discuss a rezoning request has been canceled after the request was withdrawn, according to the Rainbow City mayor s office.
City leaders had moved the public hearing to Rainbow Middle School gym, expecting a larger than normal audience to discuss the issue.
The same company that proposed such a development last year in Rainbow City had represented property owners Charles and Amanda Devine as they requested rezoning for what essentially is the same development with a few alterations, according to Rainbow City Mayor Joe Taylor.
Last year, the proposal drew widespread opposition, and Taylor said he doesn t think public sentiment has changed regarding it.
About a year ago, the Rainbow City Planning Commission considered a rezoning request property on Lumley Road that would have allowed construction of an age-restricted rental property.
The proposal sparked widespread opposition and ultimately was rejected as was a similar proposal by a different development company for a similar project in Southside, on Alabama Highway 77 just south of Southside Baptist Church.
Now, the same company that proposed the development last year in Rainbow City is representing the property owners, Charles and Amanda Devine, as they again request rezoning for what is essentially the same development with a few alterations, according to Rainbow City Mayor Joe Taylor.
