ACLU files promised lawsuit against Arkansas s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender children

The ACLU of Arkansas has joined families with transgender children and doctors in filing the promised lawsuit today against Arkansas’s new law to prohibit gender-affirming care for transgender children. The case was filed in federal court in Little Rock.  The law had no emergency clause and doesn’t take effect until the end of July. The suit seeks an injunction against it taking effect. The law also prevents the use of state money (such as Medicaid) or private insurance coverage for this health care to people under 18.  Defendants are Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, who’ll relish the spot as a backer of anti-transgender legislation, and the director and members of the state Medical Board. This is the legislation vetoed by Governor Hutchinson as overbroad (though he

Can you grow citrus trees in a cool climate?

So why should you grow citrus? Because it s fun, says Amanda Dennis, partner at The Citrus Centre (citruscentre.co.uk). The flowers, the fruit, there is nothing better than picking your own lemon or lime off your tree. The flavour in the skin and the fruit is far, far superior to anything you buy in the shop. They re all unwaxed and you get all the lovely natural oils in the skin. And they re much fresher - to me, shop-bought fruit tastes insipid, because shop bought fruit has been sitting around for weeks. Gov. Asa Hutchinson, a Republican, vetoed the measure earlier this month, calling it “a vast government overreach.” But the Arkansas General Assembly overrode the veto, and the bill will become law this summer. Emily Spurrier said when her son heard the news, he sat in her car and cried for an hour.

Closing Thought–09Apr21

Closing Thought–09Apr21 How so? The state could ban health care for some of its citizens. It’s been a difficult week for transgender people in Arkansas, and Lisa Stuart is finding it hard to stay hopeful. Last week, the state’s Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, signed two anti-LGBTQ+ bills within 48 hours of each other: a proposal banning trans girls from playing women’s sports in school and another allowing doctors to turn away LGBTQ+ patients. The Arkansas legislature followed up the enactment of those laws on Monday by passing House Bill 1570, a bill that criminalizes gender-affirming care for transgender youth. It’s now one signature away from being the first law ever of its kind.
