New Mexico students not required to take standardized test this year

Created: April 29, 2021 04:31 PM ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The U.S. Department of Education granted New Mexico’s request to not take part in standardized testing this school year. The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) is allowing districts to offer the test upon a student s request. However, they report that a small percentage of students are signing up. NMPED requested the waiver because of the pandemic. We don’t want to just say, ‘Hey, we’re going to bring you back into test. That’s not ethical, that’s not good instruction, right? So that’s probably the most important things – understanding the purpose of testing and being mindful of where the communities are, said Dr. Gwen Perea Warniment, deputy secretary of the NMPED.

Michelle Lujan Grisham announced Tuesday. The Democratic governor said she is allowing schools to open their doors to students of all ages, in a major pull-back of restrictions that were based on county-level COVID-19 case rates and hospital capacity. “We will get this right, and we will move forward, and every school district in the state will be able to welcome all ages of students safely back to the classroom on February 8,” Lujan Grisham said in her virtual State of the State address to the Legislature.
