What happens when a photographer gives up photographing for 14 years? In the case of Marin-based photographer Marna Clarke, she returns to it after her partner Igor put a camera back in her hands. After a few years of fine art work, she began work on You’re Not Getting Any Younger when she was 70. She shares intimate moments less commonly shared by older photographers, which makes for immediately striking imagery. Clarke’s work is a finalist in Photolucida’s Critical Mass competition. She spoke to us more about it and the reasons she gave up photography in the first place.

Tokyo-based photographer Hajime Kimura didn’t have an easy time finding a slaughterhouse that would allow him to photograph on the premises. With his project Tracks, Kimura’s aim was to show all aspects of the uses of horses in Japan. For this, he needed to photograph in a slaughterhouse because horse is eaten in Japan. It’s neither eaten often, nor is it a delicacy or controversial. Because horses cost far more than other animals to raise and maintain, it’s expensive. Kimura guesses that farmers consume it more than anyone else for the simple reason that they have access.
