Netflix This film shouldn’t work. It has James ‘Carpool’ Corden in it, jazz-handing with grim abandon and belting out unmemorable songs in a dodgy American accent. Its lead actress, an unknown called Jo Ellen Pellman, is dementedly smiley throughout. The political message of the film is so obvious it feels screamed into your face: tolerance is good, homophobia and small-town parochialism bad, bad, bad. Then there’s the length issue: nominally two hours 12 minutes, the film feels more like a couple of years. And yet somehow it works. I watched with my mother who gazed over at me at intervals, her face a rainbowed moon of wonder. ‘This is extraordinary!’ she’d sing. ‘This is the best film I have ever seen!
