This is the first of what we hope will be many cooperative hosted by the columbia Global Reports, which my colleague Nicholas Lemann will tell you minute. And the society of fellow at human centers, otherwise known as the of new book series in the society of fellows. Its a series which honors recent publications of the distinguished alumni of the society of fellows in the humanities at columbia, and which founded in 1975, is about celebrate its 50th anniversary. Happened with the tragic shootings in oregon last week u the threat was poster on 4chan the same message board that was used to warn students in the northwest the day before the Community College massacre in oregon. The threat was posted the day after that shooting and predicted an attack on a University Near philadelphia at 2 00 p. M. Today. The time passed and students were relieved and also reassured by the heavy Police Presence on their campuses today. I was just more alert and nothing happened, so i guess i was in good hands. The police and even the safety, checking on cars, they helped me feel safe. Reporter well, students obviously relieved that the time of the alleged threat has now passed they say this has been a long day and theyll just be glad when its over. Folks that support it and feel it was a positive thing called americas second war for independence. I think it was that. My favorite president harry truman was characteristically blunt on the war of 1812 treaty, he called it the silliest damn war we ever fought. And they think it was that, too. It was a war that had we won, candidate would have been a state. And possibly we would have had a huge slave colony in mexico, maybe even cuba. Had we lost the war of 1812, we wouldve become once again a colony of britain. But after
