ECP imposes fine on Vawda in dual nationality case - Newspaper

ISLAMABAD: The Election Com­mission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on federal Minister for Water Resources Faisal Vawda over his unending quest for adjournments in the dual nationality case against him and instructed him to appear in person before it on Feb 24, the next date of hearing in the case. The ECP expressed displeasure over the continued absence of the minister from hearings and fined him when Mr Vawda’s lawyer failed to turn up and his associate sought an adjournment, without presenting the paper of attorney (wakalatnama). The plea for Mr Vawda’s disqualification as a member of the National Assembly on the grounds that he possessed the US citizenship at the time of his election was taken up for hearing by a five-member bench of the ECP, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja.
