Spheron Architects has won a competition to remodel the square outside Will Alsop’s Stirling Prize-winning Peckham Library.
The architect, which has offices in Clapham and Accra, Ghana, beat a shortlist of three emerging practices to land the £6m Peckham Square project.
Southwark council was heavily criticised last year for putting together a 110-strong architecture framework worth £500m with almost no BAME-led practices, despite a quarter of the borough’s residents identifying as black. A revised framework is due out this spring.

The Clapham-based practice topped an undisclosed shortlist of emerging architects from black and minority ethnic backgrounds to win the competition, organised Southwark Council and judged by a panel that included local residents and young people.

Spheron Architects will now work with local residents to redesign Peckham Square as a ‘vibrant public space that meets the needs and aspirations of the local community’.
The project is the first to be advanced under the council’s Southwark Stands Together initiative – a response to the injustice and racism experienced by black, Asian and minority ethnic communities and to the inequalities exposed by the pandemic.
