ALPENA Alpena County Road Commission Managing Director Ryan Brege addressed the Alpena Lions Club on Tuesday, Feb. 2. During the Zoom meeting, plans for the updating of the Harry Fletcher Bridge on Bagley were outlined.
The Harry Fletcher Bridge was constructed in 1976 at a cost of $390,000. Since it was built, the traffic crossing the bridge has grown to a daily traffic count in excess of 15,000 vehicles. The bridge, in conjunction with the business development along Bagley and M-32, has created a bottleneck and traffic concerns.
The new bridge will have a center lane, traffic lanes and protected non-motorized lanes (going North and South). The width of the bridge will expand from 38 feet to 79 feet to accommodate the increased auto and pedestrian traffic. This expansion will help to alleviate the traffic bottleneck, make turning safer and provide our community with a state-of-the-art bridge.
