These are trying and confusing times.
The frustration with new and complex COVID-19 restrictions was palpable across the state last week from parents who for a while couldn’t take their toddlers to the playground, to restaurant owners who feared they may have to close for good.
Some county sheriffs revolted and said they would not enforce Gov. Gavin Newsom’s latest shutdown rules. Notably, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore was not among them.
As has been the case with previous pandemic guidelines, the new rules were tweaked in the face of opposition. Specifically, Newsom relented and reversed his decision that children’s playgrounds should be off limits.

“I think the rate of increase of COVID-19 patients is certainly reminiscent of that (March),” said Dr. Eisman.
More people are becoming infected with COVID-19 and some are being hospitalized, like Ana Novello. She’s a mother of three and has been fighting COVID-19 in the hospital for more than 15 days.
“So many people die because of this,” said Novello, as she warned about the severity of the disease.
While some are fighting the virus, others are fighting to keep their business alive after being ordered to shutdown yet again.
“It’s all we have,” said Federica Penn, co-owner of Operacaffe in the Gaslamp Quarter.

After spending thousands of dollars on a tented, outdoor dining space for customers at her nearly year-old vegan restaurant in North Park, owner Alondra Ruiz made a risky decision. She would stay open in defiance of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s latest stay-at-home order barring indoor and outdoor dining.
“I hope this inspires small businesses to stand up,” Ruiz said, addressing her followers on an Instagram post that drew hundreds of comments, many of them supportive. “Fight for your business that you invested so much time and energy and money into it, to stay open and fight for your rights, stand up for your family, for your employees, your community.”
