Residents quizzed police chief-designate Darcy Fleury on his approach to what they described as a crisis of homelessness and addiction in Thunder Bay's McKellar Ward at a public meeting.
Nova Scotians filed hundreds of complaints alleging police misconduct over the last decade. The public never knew what happened to most of them, but a CBC investigation found out following calls from experts for a rethink of the entire complaint system.
An independent expert panel is calling for systemic change at the Thunder Bay Police Service and the board overseeing it, saying an anti-racism policy, a trauma-informed approach to policing and a formal forum for consultation with First Nations should all be urgently implemented.
