Verizon, AT&T Spend Billions on C-Band Spectrum: What That Means for You

Verizon, AT&T Spend Billions on C-Band Spectrum: What That Means for You If you live in a dense area and want better Verizon or AT&T performance, look for a C-band phone now. By Sascha Segan (Photo: VCG via Getty Images) If you re buying a Verizon or AT&T phone this year, and you don t live out in the sticks, you need to keep an eye on C-band. The two carriers just spent $68.9 billion on this 5G spectrum, which could speed up their networks in areas covering about 60% of the US population. The C-band results came out yesterday, and Verizon and AT&T snatched up all of the frequencies that will be available at the end of 2021. T-Mobile, US Cellular, and investor groups that don t build networks themselves, were the additional major purchasers for airwaves becoming available later.

How AT&T s utility dreams crashed and burned

For almost four years, AT&T and Nokia worked diligently to sell private wireless LTE services to utility operators around the country. And for a while, the effort looked like it would be a smashing success. In 2019, AT&T reported it counted contracts with 15 different utility companies across 18 states in the US, with another 14 utilities on the hook. The utilities planned to lease spectrum in AT&T s WCS C and D Block holdings to build private wireless networks using Nokia s LTE equipment for a range of services like meter monitoring and disaster recovery. AT&T reasonably expect[ed] to contract with those utilities to deploy LTE smart grid service over the next 12-24 months, the operator told the FCC.

Verizon exec views dominant 4G LTE position as 5G advantage

Dec 15, 2020 6:32pm Verizon s mmWave deployments started with 400 MHz of bandwidth and have increased to 800 MHz. (Monica Alleven/Fierce Wireless) As T-Mobile aggressively rolls out 2.5 GHz mid-band spectrum from Sprint, there has been a significant amount of attention paid to Verizon and AT&T’s need for mid-band for 5G. In an interview with FierceWireless, Adam Koeppe, SVP of Technology, Strategy Architecture and Planning, pointed to the carrier’s dominant position in 4G LTE as an advantage for how Verizon is constructing its network for differentiated 5G experiences, and touched on mid-band for nationwide 5G using DSS. Because of the quiet period for the ongoing C-band spectrum auction, Koeppe couldn’t discuss anything about spectrum in the 3.7 GHz range other than to acknowledge Verizon’s participation.
