Spotlight: Sustainability - Driving down carbon emissions in the construction industry

Spotlight: Sustainability - Driving down carbon emissions in the construction industry 01 Mar 2021 In 2021, the conversation around climate change has evolved at pace. As a major contributor to carbon emissions the construction industry has a key role to play in driving down carbon emissions – could the use of timber solutions help achieve this? Valerie Hart investigates. Legislation passed in June 2019 requires the government to reduce the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions to net zero relative to 1990 levels by 2050. However, last December the Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new ambitious target to cut emissions by at least 68% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The UK’s new target – its nationally determined contribution under the Paris Climate Agreement – committed the UK to cutting emissions at the fastest rate of any major economy at the time.
