I think most of us can agree that âjarringâ is a pretty good word to sum up 2020 ⦠at least in terms of non-profane words.
For the past few months, I truly believed Iâd seen every astonishing moment the universe could throw at us. But leave it to mid-December end-of-the-world thriller âGreenlandâ to get one more good jab in before the New Year.
It might be hard to believe, but the year is 2020 and Gerard Butler has a lead role in a non-animated movie that isnât terrible.
Review: Greenland focuses on human side of a global disaster
Gerard Butler stars as a husband and father trying to get his family to safety after a comet wipes out most of humanity
In Greenland, a comet from outer space crashes to Earth causing an extinction level event, so it s not quite the holiday pick-me-up as, say, Mariah Carey s Magical Christmas Special.
The best parts of this action epic are the ways in which it scales down and brings its global terror home; in a way, Greenland is a domestic drama in the guise of a disaster movie. It begins with a bang, but a flabby midsection and a few too many unlikely coincidences dull its overall impact.
Greenland, a family fights for survival in the face of an extinction-level event. A comet hurtling toward Earth was supposed to provide nothing more than the fireworks display of a lifetime. But the comet is soon revealed to be a planet killer that threatens billions across the globe.
John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and young son Nathan are among the very few to be selected for air transport to a top secret safe haven, only to see their good fortune go horribly wrong when they’re separated minutes before takeoff.
In this gripping and thrilling rollercoaster ride,
You can count the days on one hand now. Less than a week before the biggest holiday on the calendar, the one that brings families together (most years, now…). Yes, Christmas unites families as does imminent disaster (as the frequent lockdowns of the pandemic have proven). But what if we’re talking about mere hours, rather than these extended quarantine periods? Could you somehow set aside everything (conflicts, distance) to fight the panicked throngs and get your loved ones to a place of somewhat uncertain safety? That’s the challenge facing the Garrity’s in this Earth-shaking (literally) new dramatic thriller. Perhaps their only chance of survival exists across the Atlantic in GREENLAND.
