Oklahoma oil worker Bill Baker (Matt Damon) travels to France to try and win the freedom of his daughter, who has been languishing in prison on murder charges in “Stillwater.
Matt Damon became a star by playing the title role in Good Will Hunting, a troubled young man who occasionally knew all the answers, when he wasn t getting into needless fights.
In Stillwater, however, Damon s Bill Baker finds himself in a situation that even Will Hunting or Jason Bourne would have difficulty solving.
Bill is a former oil-rig worker who now makes pocket money cleaning up disaster sites. There s a lull in the petroleum market, so these jobs are about the best he can hope for. One reason he could use some extra cash is that his daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin) is languishing in a French prison near Marseille.

The actor talks to Peter Travers about his role in the new dramatic thriller, Stillwater. Focus Features
Matt Damon delivers an indelible, implosive performance in âStillwater,â a deeply personal human drama disguised as a crime thriller.
The film opens in theaters this week after receiving a five-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival that brought the actor to tears.
Now 50, Damon sets aside the boyish charm that made him a star in 1997âs âGood Will Huntingâ (he and pal Ben Affleck won an Oscar for their script) and such blockbusters as the âOceanâsâ franchise, the Jason Bourne trilogy and his Golden Globe winning âThe Martian.â
Tom McCarthy’s “Stillwater” appears in its marketing to be one of those made-for-TV movies where a young American travels abroad, then is swallowed by the dark contours of her new environs. And it is up to a determined parent to save their offspring from the swarthy “otherness” of a foreign country.
Watching the trailer, I flashed back to seeing the Sally Field vehicle “Not Without My Daughter” as it played on rotation on cable. Not made-for-TV, but you get the idea. There are a lot of movies like this, enhanced in our modern times thanks to Liam Neeson becoming a AARP-approved action star who’s always getting his kids out of a sex trade ring or something.
