Gáspár Miklós Tamás, a Hungarian Marxist philosopher, passed away on 15 January, at the age of 74. Under the Stalinist regime of Hungary, he was a dissident, libertarian socialist, who got fired from his teaching position at the University of Budapest for political reasons. He became the leader of the liberal Alliance of Free Democrats in 1989, where he represented the right-wing of the party, at the beginning of Hungary’s transition to market capitalism / capitalist democracy.
