For the Bestawros family in Sydney, Coptic Orthodox Easter this year is about reconnecting with family and feeling grateful. We all got shivers [of joy], Magy Bestawros said as she helped to prepare the meal for three generations of her family.
Magy Bestawros said the atmosphere for this year s Orthodox Easter is more celebratory compared to last year. We went without this last year as did many Australians and many people who celebrate many different faiths. So for our family to come together, it just meant everything to us.
Each family brought a plate of food made with their own hands. With everyone in the same room together, they all took a moment to reflect and offer words of gratitude, Ms Bestawros said.
Home at last, perhaps.
Bryant is deacon of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church, which he helped establish in 2012 in Peoria. It’s affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, a semi-autonomous part of the main church in Moscow.
After being located in temporary sites, Holy Transfiguration moved to a building it owns at 6216 N. Sheridan Road. A Christian Science Reading Room occupied the structure previously.
The first Divine Liturgy in the new sanctuary was held Feb. 28. As is the case about once a month, a priest from a Russian church in Michigan City, Ind., traveled to Peoria to officiate, although Bryant conducts other services twice a week.

His wife of 57 years, Despina Nicolopoulos, told Seven News on Tuesday the discovery was made when her daughter asked to take a final look at her fatherâs body in the casket following the service.
However, when the coffin lid was lifted, the man inside was not Mr Nicolopoulos.
âMy daughter say, âMum not my father this one . another man,â â Ms Nicolopoulos recalled.
Both families had used Euro Funeral Services at Roselands. It emerged Mr Nicolopoulosâ body had mistakenly been buried at Rookwood Cemetery following a funeral service at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Belmore earlier on Friday.
