Several Lawrence students recently earned national recognition for their musical talents.
Free State High School’s Emily Bial, Ellie LeBar and Hollis Wilkins, and Lawrence High School’s Connor Jones and Ashton Rapp were named to the 2020 All-National Honor Ensembles by the National Association for Music Education. They are five of just 550 students nationwide to earn the honor.
Ketchikan High School s Robert Cope-Powell wasn t expecting to audition for the National Association for Music Education s all-national choir this past spring.

Los Alamos High School Senior Griffin Light has been selected as a Flute 1 in the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) 2020 All-National Concert Band Honor Ensemble.
Light is the only student selection from New Mexico.
“I’m ecstatic at having been selected, and although there have been moments where I’ve doubted myself and even occasionally considered the possibility that this was a fluke, I think that the work I put into this specific audition, as well as during my entire nine years playing the flute, were enough to get me awarded this honor,” Light said. “In short, I’m very proud of myself and the work I’ve put into this, and thankful for the teachers who have supported and taught
Maine South High School
During the 2019–20 school year, along with other accomplished music students across the United States and overseas in military base schools, Savannah Bensing and Timothy Wilcox from Maine South High School practiced with dedication to gain a part in the Illinois Music Education Association’s District 7 and Illinois All-State Honors Ensembles.
And now Savannah and Timothy will join the “best of the best” for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) 2020 All-National Honor Ensembles (ANHE) Virtual Event January 7–8, 2021. The first-ever All-National Honor Ensembles virtual event will include several rehearsals with the 2020 ANHE Conductors and workshops with renowned clinicians. Each ensemble will create a final, recorded performance that will be premiered online during the National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME) Music In Our Schools Month in March 2021.
