this is going to be a very thin christmas this year, meaning i shouldn t expect all sorts of big ticket items. so i had my expectations lowered. so when i did get nice things, i was very happy with that. but in terms of giving, i was always more of a getter. one year for christmas, my mother said, all i want for christmas is respect. and i guess i was being a naughty boy that year. and so what i did was i went to the computer that didn t do that, wrote respect, printed it, and then just put that in a frame and wrapped it up and put it under the tree. and i gave my mother respect that year for christmas, and she was very happy with that. now, christmas means a lot to me. i have twin girls, so finally i have a very, very young son, jesse jr. so we ll deliver gifts.

rachel that s quite a concept. but when you have a dad who is a devout catholic and a mom who s a very observant jew, you ve got to compromise. you ve got to make adjustments, you ve got to innovate something new. and that s what we did in the rivera family. now, first, it wasn t so easy. my dad from puerto rico, my mom from newark, new jersey, they got together right here in new york on 42nd street, a child s cafeteria. my mom was a waitress. my dad was in charge of the kitchen. help! they fell in love. and there you had a romeo and juliet story. but with a happy ending. so what we do about christmas, what we do about hanukkah. my mom insisted that my dad convert to judaism when they got married. it didn t go through the formal process. but he acknowledged to the world that yes, indeed, now he was jewish. i mean, that didn t stick, but he really tried initially. so my mom was in charge of the holiday season. now, hanukkah is very different from christmas.
