given her loss and our loss. but every christmas after that, christmases around our house were fairly simple. my mother didn t make a whole lot of money, and so there were presents under the tree. of course, this presents were very modest, but each one of them was very thoughtful and very much appreciated by the members of our family. and that was a tradition that we continue on through the rest of our lives. i remember being at christmas celebrations where there were dozens of presents under the tree and the presidents were ripped open with such haste and kind of cast aside that nobody really took in what was going on or what the president really was or what the meaning of it was. there was no real appreciation for it. and i thought to myself, that s not my idea of christmas. my idea of christmas is a very special gift, maybe one or two that you would really cherish. and i remember from my 13th birthday, my mother got me one of those
and hockey is a big wintertime sport in canada, so a lot of young men and women are on their skates on the rideau canal, the longest outdoor skating rink in the world. i remember that, of course, growing up, we would always, every season go out on the rideau canal and sharpen our skates, and then there would be hot chocolate and donuts, beaver tails afterwards. beavertail is sort of like a long donut with whatever topping you like on top of it. chocolate or icing or icing sugar or cinnamon. so those are the things that i remember. christmas, of course, was an exciting time as a kid just opening up the box. we didn t have a tree that we would cut. it was always, you know, the box tree that the artificial tree. but that was very special to me because we had a tree that was very, very old. my father had this artificial tree when he was growing up. so that in and of itself was a big event to open up
one day i m going to get the opportunity to buy a house just like that. so we would go in those neighborhood and we were right. which house had the best light we would see who had the decorations the best. it was something to achieve, something bigger than ourselves. and i m happy to say one of these days, me and my brother, sister, we re going to be able to buy one of those houses. yeah, it can be tough to get over it when you don t get the right man eating monster, which is how brian kilmeade feud with santa began. well, i wouldn t say feud with santa. let s just say a little disappointment with santa. i always had the best christmases we were having for whatever we got, but every once in a while, especially when you were a little kid, even thinking back, there s that one gift doesn t have to be expensive, that one gift that you just asked santa for because it just fits the bill. it s who you want to be. and for me, it was pretty clear, obviously back i guess in the seventies, i want
