. a new theory is emerging as to what may have downed flight 8501. indonesian weather experts are pointing to possible icing-related engine problems as one explanation. it s all outlined in a new 14-page government report that looked at weather conditions on the day the plane crashed into the java sea. let s talk more about this with cnn meteorologist chad myers and former pilot alistair rosenschein joining me by phone from england. chad, let s start with you. we know it was stormy on the day of this crash but how would you explain icing inside the jet engines? ana, i think you can almost stop where you just started right there since all we know truly, truly, the fact we snow that it was stormy that day. the rest from where we go from here is just someone s opinion and you know what they mean. so here we go. this is where the plane was, 32,000 feet flying at about 30

steve ascent and then the plane stalled, does that make sense to you? well it does in some respects. look there are two thing there are several things that can cause an aircraft to go up at a very rapid rate of climb. one is pilot-induced, pulling the nose up. although it s very difficult to maintain any high rate of climb at high altitude because the aircraft performance is insufficient to maintain a high rate of cliep. you could get an initial high rate but then it would drop off as the aircraft stalls. the other way is an updraft in the thunderstorm. if there s a very strong updraft, the aircraft could in theory climb at great rate. but you know which ever way you look it, ku i do not there s only so much power from those engines so unless you ve got forward air speed, you do not have control of the aircraft and it will stall. alistair rosenschein, thank you so much for joining me once again. i sure appreciate it. still to come in the newsroom, she knew the risk but loved

were intact and clothed. crews retrieved a manually operated exit door an exit slide, a blue suitcase and what appears to be a window panel. what does that say about the flight s final minutes? did the plane try to make a water landing like captain sully sullenberger s miracle on the hudson? would that be possible in monsoon season? joining me now a man who knows those conditions former pilot alistair rosenschein. welcome, sir. hello. i m so glad you re joining us. can you hear me alistair? when you hear things like this, what s goes through your mind? well, the first thing that
