Māori carving found in bushes after being stolen from Auckland apartment building

NZ POLICE/SUPPLIED A man who allegedly stole a treasured Māori carving from a North Shore apartment building made his escape via e-scooter. A “treasured” Māori carving stolen from an apartment building has been found in bushes not far away. The carving was stolen from the Fernz Motel and Apartments in Birkenhead, on Auckland’s North Shore, on April 28. A man was captured on CCTV taking the “unique” piece, then leaving on an e-scooter. On Monday, police said the carving had been found on Woodside Ave in Northcote, just 2.1km from the building. READ MORE:

Detective Constable Alistair Harford said police are asking for help to identify the man. The male arrives on an electric scooter and is wearing distinctive white overalls. Police belive the community will be able to help identify this male and return the unique piece to its rightful owner. He said anyone with information should call 105 or message it on Facebook. A man stole a Māori carving from an apartment building in Auckland and left the scene on an e-scooter, police said. The man was captured on CCTV as he arrived at the Fernz Motel and Apartments on Rawene Rd in Birkenhead about 5.16am on Wednesday April 28. He then removed the carving – a “treasured taonga” – from the wall before taking off on the scooter, detective constable Alistair Harford said.
