Thousands of children were sent from their homes to residential schools for a century — from the 1860s until the late 1960s. Children were often mistreated and poorly fed. Several died and their bodies were never returned home.
John Hughes worked as the editor of the Deseret News in Utah for 10 years. He also was the editor at the Christian Science Monitor. He won a Pulitzer Prize for reporting on the collapse of the Sukarno regime in Indonesia.
