the book is when ben, when you talk about the blackness after the bomb. you compared it to death. then you talk about the voice that you heard in that moment. tell me about that. that was the moment after the second bomb had landed and i blocked out. i had a number of the facial injuries, the shrapnel in the eye and in the throat. i was all but gone. i was still in the car and in to this blackness came my daughter. really my daughters. all of them. i could see my daughter in front of me. she was as life-like as anything. she said, daddy, you have to get out of the car. it brought me back. i came back in the world and the car and the fire. i managed to drag myself out before the third bomb hit the car. really that day it was my family that saved me. alicia and my girls reminding me there s something more to fight for, there s something great here. that s what i thought about.
didn t want them to see me like that. we wanted to keep this family stable. we didn t want to uplift their lives when so much was happening. we made that decision. alicia took over at home and did two jobs for five months. she was a father, a mother and took care of them and had to ask and answer questions we would have never had had to answer from our kwens until many years later. it s difficult when you have to continue front big injuries and a big event with young daughters. she handled it amazingly. they have stayed strong and stable throughout and i look back and it was the perfect decision that we made and may not for other people but we did at this time right way. you see so much great parenting in this story when you look at the way you handled this. you know, we can talk about it in a moment. the book robot leg that alicia left it in the house so they could look at it and find it.
everything that we fought for. incredible. martha: honored to be joined with ben hall and his wife, alicia. so great to see you and great to have you back here at fox. we all are such huge admirerers of your work over all of these years and thrilled to see you doing so well. thank you so much. i can tell you this is a real honor for me right now. it s the first time i ve been on air with alicia. she s joining us now. this whole story is about alicia, trying to get home to my family. so she s the one that should be getting more credit than i should throughout this story. martha: alicia, you have a great love story. as you watch this and as you worked with the producers in this documentary, what do you want people to understand about your family and about ben and about the love that the two of you share? oh, gosh. we got through it is all i can
have your wounds healed. actually it s much harder when you go home and you volunteer to take these injuries back. life changes at home. many things add home i would have done and i can t do and alicia does them for me. i knew i was going home and life would be different and alicia would have more to do. i was very worried the pressure would disrupt our lives, be too hard. it comes down to marrying the most incredible woman who has stuck and done everything for me every single step of the way. no, no, no. he s being far too nice. we did it together. martha: how so? it was a full team effort. it was a team effort from all of us. the children, benji, my parents, my family was so supportive. my mom was there, my dad was there every step of the way. my sisters, my two sisters. so we ve all had so much support. we have got through this with so much kindness from other people. martha: what are the lessons?
