Helena Hernmarck, one of the last great tapestry artists working today, has created 278 monumental compositions throughout her life. And while at one point 60 of these tapestries could be found hanging throughout the U.S., most Americans have still never heard her name.
Perhaps, however, that will soon change thanks to her latest creation: Commissioned and titled
Maple Tree and
Flower respectively, her new two-part work has recently been installed inside the elevator lobby of real estate developer Stephen Ross’s 35 Hudson Yards penthouse residence. (Ross was an instrumental force in the construction of the wide complex.) But the pieces which are two of her most structurally innovative works to date are daring for one key reason. Rather than simply hang down one wall, they stretch up to cover the space’s ceiling per her client’s request.
